Storming of Hougomont 1815

The start of the Campaign

In April 1809, the Austrian Empire decided to attack the French protectorate lands on it’s Western Borders, known as the Confederation of the Rhine. The first target was to take Bavaria, and seize the capital, Munich, whilst isolating the French III Corps under Marshall Davout, and hopefully push the area of French control away from the borders of the Empire.

Archduke Charles had completely remodelled the Austrian forces along French innovative lines, with a Korps System, with Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery Units, supported by Logistics and Engineering Units. With this new approach to tactics and using Napoleonic strategy, the Austrians hoped to isolate and destroy the French forces in Bavaria piecemeal, before Napoleon could return from Spain.
